Adult
vaccinations and foreign travel
Advice and immunisation is
available, in accordance with Public
Health guidelines.
for a copy of our general travel
advice leaflet. If you are due to
travel please ask for one of our
travel health questionnaires. It is essential that this
be completed prior to your
appointment in order to allow the
nurse to assess your needs. There is
no charge for advice but there may
be for certain
vaccinations. Please make an
appointment with the travel nurse
(at the Thame surgery) well in
advance of your holiday. 6-8 weeks
before travel is recommended.
We recommend flu and pneumonia
vaccinations as advised by the
Department of Health and for
patients who suffer from diabetes,
asthma and other chronic conditions.
Please contact the surgery for
advice.

Ante-natal
clinics
Ante-natal clinics are run by the
midwife (with the doctor) to monitor
your health through pregnancy, and
the development of your unborn baby.
Appointments for the ante-natal
clinic should be made through
reception.
Asthma
checks
Asthma checks are carried out by the
practice nurses to monitor your
condition, advise on inhaler
technique and new medications.
Cervical
smears
It is very important for all women
within the age range advised by the
Department of Health to have a
cervical smear test every three
years for which they will receive a
recall letter. (This age range may
alter in the future in line with any
Government initiative). The test is
usually carried out by the practice
nurse.
Child
health and vaccinations
Childhood vaccinations are commenced
in line with advice from the
Department of Health. These
vaccinations protect children from
whooping cough, diphtheria, tetanus,
polio, mumps, measles, German
measles, Hib meningitis and
meningitis C. The only reasons for
not receiving these injections are
if your child has an acute illness
or has had a reaction (severe) to a
previous vaccination. Child welfare
clinics are held in all the
surgeries. We are also happy to see
children if parents are concerned
about the child’s emotional
well-being.
Contraceptive services
Guidance about the range of
contraceptive services is available
in all the surgeries. Please
telephone the receptionist in the
first instance who will be happy to
help you.

Emergency Contraception
Emergency contraception can be
effective for up to 72 hours after
unprotected sex and is best used as
soon as possible. This is available
from your doctor, a pharmacist or
the doctors’ Harmoni out of hours
service. |
Diabetic
checks
Diabetic checks are carried out by
the practice nurses for assessment
on all aspects of your diabetic care
including blood sugar measurement,
urine testing, blood pressure
measurement and advice on diet and
foot care.
Minor
surgery
The doctors carry out some minor
surgical procedures and will advise
you when this is appropriate.
Pre-Conceptual Advice
If you are trying to become pregnant
it is important to establish that
you have an immunity to Rubella
(German measles). This can be
checked with a simple blood test. We
would also recommend that you take a
supplement of Folic Acid while you
are trying to become pregnant and
during the first three months of
pregnancy. Folic Acid has been
proven to help prevent spina bifida
and other abnormalities. |
